Angle Grinder Sizes Explained: 115mm vs 125mm vs 230mm

Three angle grinders, 115mm, 125mm and 230mm, on a steel workbench with cutting discs
The number on an angle grinder is the disc size. Small grinders are light and easy to control; 230mm grinders cut deeper through stone, pipes and steel.

Short answer: the size of an angle grinder is the diameter of the disc it takes. 115mm and 125mm grinders are light, one-hand tools for everyday cutting, grinding and polishing. 230mm grinders are big two-hand tools that cut much deeper, ideal for stone, concrete blocks, thick pipes and steel profiles.

Size comparison

115mm (4.5") 125mm (5") 230mm (9")
Approx. cutting depth About 30mm About 35mm About 65–70mm
Typical power 700–900W 900–1500W 2000–3000W
Weight and handling Lightest, easy one-hand control Light, a little more reach Heavy, needs two hands
Best for Tiles, thin metal, rust removal, tight spaces All-rounder for metal, tiles and light masonry Stone, blocks, thick pipes, steel profiles

Cutting depths are approximate and depend on the disc and guard.

115mm: the light all-rounder

A 115mm grinder is easy to control with one hand for cutting rebar.

The most popular size for homes and maintenance. It is easy to hold, fits in tight places and discs are cheap and widely available.

125mm: a bit more reach and power

Slightly deeper cuts than 115mm and often more powerful motors. A great choice for workshops, welders and tilers.

230mm: for deep, heavy cuts

A 230mm grinder with a diamond disc cuts deep into stone. Always use both hands.

For cutting stone, kerbstones, concrete blocks and thick metal. Always use both hands and a stable stance.

Choose the right disc

  • Cutting discs (thin): for metal or stone cuts.
  • Grinding discs (thick): for removing welds and smoothing edges.
  • Flap discs and wire brushes: for rust, paint removal and finishing.
  • Diamond discs: for tiles, marble, granite and concrete.

Safety rules that matter

  • Never fit a bigger disc than the grinder is designed for, and never remove the guard.
  • Check that the disc’s maximum speed (RPM) is equal to or higher than the grinder’s speed.
  • Wear eye protection, gloves and hearing protection. See Personal Protective Equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 125mm disc on a 115mm grinder?

No. A bigger disc spins faster at its edge than it is rated for and will not fit under the guard, which is dangerous. Always use the disc size your grinder is designed for.

Which angle grinder size is best for home use?

A 115mm or 125mm grinder covers almost every home job: cutting tiles, metal bars, removing rust and sharpening tools.

Corded or cordless angle grinder?

Cordless grinders are ideal for quick cuts anywhere. For long cutting sessions or 230mm discs, corded grinders give continuous power.
